Oh, how easy it is for us to feel cursed or to curse! Sometimes life goes wrong and immediately many of us profane the name of Jesus with loud and obnoxious cursing. I have heard many complain in tragedy, “This happened because I’m cursed!” (Does this sound familiar to you? It does to me.)

Let me address this cursing problem. There was one person, which lived, who was beyond reproach, never did any wrong, and was always doing well to others. This person was also the Son of God. His name was Jesus Christ. This name is found on the lips of almost everyone as a blessing or a curse. However, this person was cursed beyond measure. The record states “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree!” (Galatians 3:14) Moses wrote this rule in the law. “If a man has committed a sin worthy of death . . . And you hang him on a tree . . . He who is hanged is accursed of God,” (Deuteronomy 21: 22-23).

If you haven’t heard the story, Jesus Christ was nailed to a cross of wood, crucified and died on that tree. The man who committed no sin, crime, or evil became a curse. He was hung on a tree. Many who watched cursed him in his agony. His friend Matthew wrote of this saying, “And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads,” (Matthew 27:28). Wonder what they were really saying? Listen to an idiot who stubs his toe. Listen to how he, G-Ds God and boisterously scream at Jesus Christ.

Yes, the man who was pure became a dying curse. He was smitten and afflicted mercilessly. At that hanging, all turned away from Him, even His Father, God, forsook Him. He was really cursed. However, here is a bit of information you may not know. This man, Jesus, hanging on the tree, crucified, wasn’t really the one who was cursed, it is you and I, who were cursed. Every man, woman and child have the curse in them. Christ did not! Therefore, why was He cursed? Jesus was cursed because He did it for you and me. “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, HAVING BECOME a CURSE FOR US” (Galatians 3:13). In a way, our curse cursed Christ to the tree.

What are we to make of this? We were the cursed, but Christ became the curse for us. We are to make much of it! If you are living a cursed life and thinking there is no way to break this curse, think anew! Go to the tree where Christ became a curse for you and give-up your curse there! Jesus said, “He came to give us life, and for us to have life more abundantly!” (See John 10:10) How can you or I have an abundance of the life Christ wants to give us, when we hold onto the curses, He already took from us? Friends, lay your curses down at the cross and never self-curse yourself again!

Examine the picture posted with this writing and see the cursed face of the Savior in the tree bearing it all for you. See how great a curse He became for you. May the Holy Spirit open your eyes to this.
