“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” Mark 4:9 NASB
Is the Lord Jesus an audiologist? Is He concerned about the ability of your ear to hear? After all, He did heal many who were deaf.
“They brought to Him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they implored Him to lay His hand on him. Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva; and looking up to heaven with a deep sigh, He said to him, ‘Ephphatha!’ that is, ‘Be opened!’ And his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was removed, and he began speaking plainly.” Mark 7:32-35 NKJV
To allay concerns, yes Jesus does care about our ability to hear with our ears. However, when He says, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear,” the concern is more than the working of the eardrum, stirrup, anvil and hammer. The Lord is talking about the hearing of understanding in our mind. When Jesus commands us to hear, He really wants us to understand what He means. The ability to hear with the understanding is a labor requiring concentration, willpower and critical thinking. When the hearing of understanding happens, the produce from it constructs a mind ready for positive action. The proof of this is found in these words of Jesus.
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.” Matthew 7:24-25 NKJV
The hearing of understanding, to the Word of God, produces a person, who can stand firm along the difficult path of life. What a beautiful word picture, by Jesus, to say people who truly hear, — Listen and Understand and Act — are wise, strong and enduring. The reason for this is taught by Paul.
“But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Hebrews 5:14 NKJV
The fact is plain, mature disciples of Christ have ears, which hear! On the flip side of the record, are the people who hear the sound only. These are not mature Christians, but babes in Christ or unbelievers. There is a saying about this type of hearing.
“The sound goes in one ear and comes out the other!”
Listen to how Jesus explains this.
“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” Matthew 7:26-27 NKJV
When the Word of God goes in one ear and comes out the other, it is not heard by the hearer! There is no labor, requiring concentration, willpower and critical thinking. Therefore, the Lord calls this type of person, a fool who will collapse in the difficult journey of life. The word picture Jesus describes of a house of a fool collapsing is not pretty. How many times did you not listen to Jesus, and everything around you collapses in the storm? I have a few broken heart collapses, from failing to heed the call to hear. Listening and hearing Christ’s words, must be a daily discipline. No matter how long you are in the faith, a failure to hear and ignore God’s word can happen at any moment.
“Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.” Colossians 2:8 NKJV
If a vacuum enters your mind, because you have let God’s Word go in one ear and out the other, something will come in to fill the void. Perhaps, you did not hear the Word of God telling you not to lie? Possibly, you have lied, and your life is built on a falsehood? Has your deceitful foundation collapsed? Maybe, you did not hear the command, not to commit adultery or fornication? Is the foundation of your marriage and family now collapsed because you committed it? Do you have an STD or emotional disturbance because of all types of fornication? I ask this question to the clergy. Have you sexually abused those in your charge? The foundation of the church is collapsing because of you. I wonder if you have understood this word, “You shall not steal!” The church and the world have people who have stolen goods and embezzled church or business funds. If you were caught, how hard did you fall? If you haven’t been caught, how great is your fear of being caught? God said, do not gossip. Do we hear it? God said, show no partiality. Do we hear it? God said, stop our foolish behavior of pride. Do we hear it? We must remember a simple truth.
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17 NKJV
Are you someone who has heard, “Do not have other gods than the God of the Bible? Have you heard the salvation message of Jesus Christ? Nevertheless, this sound has gone in one ear and out the other. If this is so, you will be a foolish person who built their house on the sand. I pray you will hear the voice of Jesus and build your house on the Rock.
A final thought must be examined.
“And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh.” Ecclesiastes 12:12 NKJV
In the global world of communication, including Christianity, there is no end to books. We are overloaded with many teachers and teachings professing one-thing or the other. This over-abundance of words is causing great chaos in hearing the truth. I try to follow one simple rule in the figuring out of what I hear.
“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.’” John 8:31-32 NKJV
If anything, I hear, by any of my senses, brings me into bondage, it is not truth. My freedom has collapsed. These words are not in accordance with the words of Jesus. Therefore, those heard words must be done away with. A heavy reliance on the Holy Spirit is a must for proper hearing.
“For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:11 NKJV
The conclusion: Let anyone who has ears, hear! Even so, beware of the things you hear. Hear Jesus!
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” Philippians 4:8 NKJV
