Why Christmas?

What Is The Reason For The Season?

To the generation that has systematically dismantled the underpinning of the moral codes of the Judeo-Christian foundation and has waged a war on Christmas, many of us wonder if you really like the fruit of your doings?  We, as a nation, since our founding, invariably had a problem of living up to the Royal Law of Love. However, we had the light of Christmas to point us to the way of righteousness. As this light gets dimmer, and the corrosive working of unrighteousness grows in greater darkness, perhaps it is time to ask, “Why Christmas?”

The first reason for Christmas is, Christmas was a promise of God to us. After the fall of man, sin changed the genetic code of Adam and Eve. Therefore, God confronts them about their trespass. Adam and Eve were afraid to face God, because they knew their trespass was punishable by death. The verdict of eating the forbidden fruit was ringing like a giant bell in their hearts,

“For in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die!” Genesis 2:17 NKJV

So, when they heard the voice of the Lord God in the Garden calling to them, they ran away in humongous, terrifying, uncontrollable, fear! As Adam testifies,

“We heard your voice God, and we hid ourselves because we were afraid!” Genesis 3:10 NKJV

Yes, they should be afraid, because the Judge had entered the room and the verdict was clear! However, Christmas was in the air, and the first Noel was proclaimed.

Let us, read the account of the court proceedings from that day as recorded in Genesis 3:11-15.

“God said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten [fruit] from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ And the man said, ‘The woman whom You gave to be with me—she gave me [fruit] from the tree, and I ate it.’ Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’ And the woman said, ‘The serpent beguiled and deceived me, and I ate [from the forbidden tree].’ The Lord God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all the cattle, And more than any animal of the field; On your belly you shall go, And dust you shall eat All the days of your life.  And I will put enmity (open hostility) Between you and the woman, And between your seed (offspring) and her Seed; He shall [fatally] bruise your head, And you shall [only] bruise His heel.'” (AMP)

I can see it in my minds’ eye, Adam looking at Eve and in wonder saying, “Eve the death sentence is deferred! The Judge has spoken. The Seed out of your womb will deliver us from it!” Even as God expelled them from Paradise, the promise of Christmas was burning in their hearts! Why Christmas, because Christmas was promised to us.

The second reason for Christmas is, we are no longer created in the image of God. We are the offspring of the sin marred image and genetically imperfect likeness of Adam.

We read in Genesis 5:3,

“Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image!” KJV

The perfect, pure, wonderful, image of God was lost to mankind and the imperfect, degenerate, image of Adam and his likeness to become evil is now our lot. Therefore, we as Adam, are under the deferred death sentence. The Scripture teaches this fact.

“All have sinned and come short of the glory (Image) of God,” and “The wage of sin is death!” Romans 3:23 and 6:23 NKJV

Why, Christmas you ask? Well, take an honest look at the whole, wide world and yourself. The answer to this examination should make you cry out, “I need Christmas!”

The third reason for Christmas, is because humans cannot earn or gain the promise of Christmas by our own works, devices, or so-called obedience to laws, rules, sacrifices, or precepts. Our righteousness compared to the righteousness of God is not righteous at all. God declares this truth in Isaiah 64:4-6.

“Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him. You come to the help of those who gladly do right, who remember your ways. But when we continued to sin against them, you were angry. How then can we be saved? All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.” (NIV)

The Lord’s half-brother, James taught,

“For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.” James 2:10 NIV

With this small understanding, we comprehend; Christmas is a gift to save us and to keep us from being swept away.  Paul declares this,

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV

Why Christmas, because, contrary to the popular belief, “All roads lead to God,” there is nothing you can do to be saved. As the Scripture testifies,

“There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God.” Romans 3:10-11 NIV

In addition, because the only thing God owes every human, which is or was, is death! Yes, believe this or not, God owes you one promise, DEATH! So how can we save ourselves from that? Therefore, we really need the promise of Christmas. We certainly need Gods’ gift, because Christmas is the only way back to Him!

The fourth reason For Christmas is, the love of God.”God is love,” the Apostle John tells us! He also warns us,

“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” 1 John 4:8 NIV

It is a fact, contrary to the belief that the Biblical God is an angry God; He is a loving God. He is a God who loves us beyond understanding. Since, He loves us, He gives us Christmas. Why does God do this? He does this out of a love which takes responsibility for His creation.

“Because love covers over a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8 NIV

I wonder if you smell Christmas in these words from the woman’s Seed,

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 NKJV

I wonder if you smell Christmas, when you hear these words,

“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14 NKJV

I wonder if you smell Christmas, when you hear these words,

“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 NKJV

So, Why Christmas? We have Christmas because of Gods’ love for us, not because of our love for Him. He really has kept His promise.

Therefore, to the generation that is systematically dismantling the Judeo-Christian ethic and waging a war on Christmas; I challenge you to look past the Santa Clauses, the materialism, and the Christmas trees this Christmas. Please, take a deep long look at yourself and the world around you. I hope you see all its corruption, hate, anger, filthy sexual appetites, selfishness, overwhelming poverty, madmen wanting nuclear bombs, wars, terrorism, poverty, covetousness, lying politicians, etc.

If you honestly do this and examine yourself considering a Righteous God, you won’t be mockingly chiding “Why Christmas!” However, you will be humbly crying, “The world and I need Christmas!” May you find the reason for the season this year. Christmas is the only hope for us all! I gratefully say, Merry Christmas to All!
